Dry Brushing for Healthier Skin

Find out what dry brushing is and how to do it to improve the health of your skin.

Have you heard of dry brushing for healthier skin?

Dry brushing is exactly what it sounds like - using a natural bristled brush to gently massage the body. It is an old beauty ritual that can benefit skin in several ways.

What is dry brushing?

Dry brushing can:

  • Exfoliate dry, flaky skin from the skin's surface.

  • Increase circulation, which carries fresh blood and nutrients to skin.

  • Boosts lymphatic flow, which helps the body to detoxify.

  • Temporarily plumps skin due to increased circulation.

How do I dry brush?

It is important to take a gentle approach, so skin is supported and not damaged. You should choose a brush that is specifically designed for dry brushing. These brushes have bristles that are firm enough for the treatment, but soft enough not to scratch the skin.

To dry brush:

  • Start with completely dry skin.

  • Starting with the feet, gently pass the brush - with light, gentle pressure - over the skin in long circular movements, always toward the heart, up to the neck only - never dry brush your face.

  • Shower off with warm water after dry brushing to remove dead skin. You can then apply a body scrub to the entire body in gentle circular motions, rinsing off with warm water.

  • Lightly towel dry and immediately apply a moisturizing body butter or lotion while skin is still damp.

Once a week is good for a dry brushing session, however, there are some precautions:

  • Do not dry brush if you have sensitive skin - it could be too aggressive of a treatment.

  • Do not dry brush over irritated skin, such as a rash or a sunburn or inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, eczema or psoriasis.

  • Do not dry brush over open wound or abrasions.

  • Do not be too aggressive with the treatment - keep it light and gentle. While it is normal for skin to get somewhat red from increased circulation, you don't want to rub skin harshly. Be especially delicate on more sensitive areas, such as stomach and breasts.

  • Wash your dry brush regularly to remove dead skin cells and keep it clean.

  • Wear a natural sun protection after a dry brushing session, as your skin can be more vulnerable to the sun.

  • If you are unsure if dry brushing is suitable for you, check with your dermatologist or licensed skin care therapist.
